Hewlett Packard Enterprise Data Science Institute

The Division of Research is happy to announce the appointment of Martin Huarte-Espinosa to associate director of the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Data Science Institute, effective November 25.

Huarte-Espinosa joined the Hewlett Packard Enterprise Data Science Institute (HPE DSI) as a High-Performance Computing (HPC) Specialist in 2014, where he provided consulting and training services to the community on technical and systematic computing and HPC methods for STEM research.

He has also organized multiple University of Houston-sponsored HPC data analytics workshops for students and industry professionals. In 2019, Huarte-Espinosa was appointed the executive director of The Society of HPC Professionals whose mission is to educate and connect the high-performance computing user community to state-of-the-art technology to optimize business processes and workforce advancement.

Huarte-Espinosa holds a BCs, and an equivalent of a MSc, in Theoretical Astrophysics. After receiving a highly competitive scholarship, Huarte-Espinosa received a Ph.D. in HPC models of magnetized galaxies from the Cavendish Astrophysics Group at the University of Cambridge, UK.

Prior to joining UH, Huarte-Espinosa held research positions at the University of Rochester’s Physics Department and the Institute of Optics.

In his new role, Huarte-Espinosa will be responsible for the day-to-day activities of the HPE DSI and will implement new campaigns and activities to realize the vision of the institute.

“Martin’s expertise in HPC and his knowledge of the campus research community will be an asset to the DSI in his new role,” said Claudia Neuhauser, director of the HPE DSI and associate vice president for research. “Martin has already demonstrated clear leadership during the past several months as we integrated CACDS into the institute and have worked to improve our services. I very much look forward to working with him over the next few years."
